KPTCC Welcomes you All. Reflection of Feeling

Reflection of Feeling

Reflection of feeling is a technique used in counseling to help clients feel heard and understood. It involves restating or paraphrasing the client's words in a way that acknowledges and validates the emotions they are expressing.

The purpose of reflection of feeling is to create a safe and supportive environment for the client to explore and express their emotions. By reflecting their feelings back to them, the counselor is communicating empathy and understanding, which can help the client to feel more comfortable and open in sharing their thoughts and feelings.

Example of reflection of feeling in counseling:

Client: "I'm just really frustrated with my job right now. I feel like I'm not making any progress and I'm stuck in the same position."

Counselor: "It sounds like you're feeling really stuck and discouraged about your job."

In this example, the counselor is reflecting back the client's feelings of frustration and stagnation. This helps the client feel heard and validated, which can encourage them to share more about their situation and feelings.
