Basic Counseling Skills

Basic counseling skills for teachers include:

  1. Active listening: The ability to fully focus on the student and understand their perspective and needs.
  2. Empathy: The ability to understand and share the student's feelings.
  3. Reflecting: The ability to reflect back to the student what they have said, to help them gain insight into their thoughts and feelings.
  4. Open-ended questioning: The ability to ask questions that encourage the student to explore their thoughts and feelings.
  5. Summarizing: The ability to summarize the main points of a conversation, to ensure understanding and to help the student see the broader picture.
  6. Clarifying: The ability to help the student understand their own thoughts and feelings.
  7. Providing feedback: The ability to give constructive feedback to the student, in order to help them understand and improve their behaviour.
  8. Self-awareness: The ability to be aware of one's own feelings, thoughts and biases.
  9. Cultural sensitivity: The ability to be aware of, and respect, the cultural backgrounds of students.
  10. Confidentiality: The ability to maintain confidentiality and to respect the privacy of the student, unless there is a risk of harm to the student or others.

It's important to note that these skills are not only for counseling but also for teaching and mentoring, and that these skills should be practiced and developed over time.
