What is School Counseling?

School counseling is a profession that involves providing support and guidance to students in educational settings. School counselors typically work in public and private schools, and their main goal is to help students succeed academically, emotionally, and socially. They do this by providing a range of services, such as:

  1. Academic counseling: School counselors work with students to set academic goals and develop plans for achieving them. They also provide support for students who are struggling academically.
  2. Social and emotional counseling: School counselors help students with emotional and social issues, such as stress, anxiety, and relationship problems. They also provide support for students who are dealing with difficult life events, such as the death of a loved one or a family separation.
  3. Career counseling: School counselors help students explore their interests and skills, and provide information and resources on different career options.
  4. Group counseling: School counselors lead small groups of students on topics such as stress management, coping with loss, and building self-esteem.
  5. Referral services: School counselors can refer students and families to community resources, such as mental health professionals, if they need additional support.

School counselors also play a important role in preventing and addressing issues of bullying, harassment, and violence, and promoting a safe and inclusive environment in schools. They work closely with other school professionals such as teachers, administrators, and outside agencies to support the overall well-being of students.
